RHY Pride Guide

In observance of Pride Month observed every June, the Family and Youth Services Bureau (FYSB), Runaway and Homeless Youth Program, and the Runaway and Homeless Youth Training, Technical Assistance, and Capacity Building Center (RHYTTAC) have prepared a list of resources and tools to assist RHY programs in increasing their knowledge and understanding of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersex, Asexual, and Two-Spirit (LGBTQIA2S+) community and how systems impact this specific population.

The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersex, Asexual, and Two-Spirit (LGBTQIA2S+) acronym has been used in many ways. LGBTQ+ is generally the most common; however, this Pride Month we want to uplift the additional letters of the acronym; especially “2S” which stands for “Two-Spirit”. Two-Spirit is a term used by some Indigenous people who identify as having both a masculine and a feminine spirit which influences their sexual gender and/or spiritual identity.  As Pride is an expression of joy, acceptance, authenticity, visibility, and positive change, the acknowledgement of the 2S+ in the queer acronym is a display of respect for tribal culture and gratitude to the Indigenous people for their contributions to the LGBTQIA2S+ communities and culture.
