Dr. Chan Hellman

Dr. Chan Hellman joined the University of Oklahoma in 2002. He is a professor in the Anne & Henry Zarrow School of Social Work and Founding Director of The Hope Research Center. He currently holds Adjunct Professor Appointments in the Department of Internal Medicine and Department of Pediatrics for the OU College of Medicine and the Department of Health Promotion Sciences for the OU College of Public Health.

Dr. Hellman has published numerous scholarly articles in scientific journals, in addition to technical reports, books, and research presentations at both national and international conferences. Dr. Hellman’s research focuses on applying hope theory to those impacted by trauma and adversity. He is also interested in the impact of prevention and intervention services on increasing and sustaining client hope. He teaches masters- and doctoral-level students, primarily in positive psychology, research methods, and statistics. He also directs student research in the areas of hope and nonprofit organizations.

Dr. Hellman notes his personal connection to the work of RHY grantees, as he was homeless throughout most of his high school years. Through his work, he aims to promote better outcomes by supporting organizations to become hope-centered and trauma-informed. Dr. Hellman states, “My work over the last 10+ years is on understanding the impact of trauma on the well-being of children and adults. We [Hope Research Center] have found that hope is one of the most important predictors of positive outcomes for trauma-exposed youth.”

Dr. Gloria Burgess

Dr. Gloria Burgess is a top inspirational speaker. By triumphing over extreme poverty, racism, and sexism, her message conveys that one’s life circumstances do not predict one’s destiny. As an acclaimed international speaker, she has delivered keynotes to tens of thousands of people in nearly 30 countries. She has shared the stage with luminaries such as Dr. Phil McGraw, Marianne Williamson, Dr. Bernie Siegel, Jean Houston, John O’Donohue, Marci Shimoff, and Immaculée Ilibagiza.

She has been featured on numerous television and radio programs, including NPR, British Public Radio, and Seattle’s renowned Dr. Pat Show. Her clients include Microsoft, Starbucks, Boeing, MSNBC, Farmers Insurance, AT&T, Russell Financial, Providence Health Systems, American Business Women’s Association, Executive Women in Texas Government, Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, University of Southern California, International Coach Federation, Embassy of South Africa in Switzerland, National Parliament of Kenya, Women’s International Network, and AGLOW International.
