Series Part 1: Human Trafficking Prevention: Strategies for RHY Programs
Wednesday, July 21, 2021, 2:00 PM - 3:30 PM EDT
Category: Virtual Training

Human Trafficking Series

In 2020, the Family and Youth Services Bureau (FYSB) developed and released the Issue Brief: Human Trafficking Prevention for Runaway and Homeless Youth (RHY) Settings. This Issue Brief outlines recommendations to integrate human trafficking prevention into RHY settings. The recommendations were developed based on RHY grantees feedback (i.e., current practice perceptions on human trafficking prevention for young people experiencing homelessness and housing instability), existing research and resources, CDC’s prevention principles, and the RHY programmatic framework.

This three-part series will build on information from the Issue Brief to increase participants’ understanding of, and capacity to integrate culturally responsive prevention strategies into their existing programs utilizing public health, trauma-informed, and Positive Youth Development (PYD) principles. This series is intended for FYSB Runaway and Homeless Youth (RHY) Grantees and is not open to the public. Please share with your agency colleagues.

All grantees are invited to attend the virtual training. Grantees who would like to participate in one or both of the Technical Assistance (TA) Cafes must have attended the live virtual training or viewed the recording.

Series Part 1: Human Trafficking Prevention: Strategies for RHY Programs

Date: July 21, 2021 from 2:00-3:30 PM ET (Virtual Training)

Youth experiencing homelessness or housing instability are trafficked for sex or labor at exponentially higher rates than other youth. Interventions, including prevention, should be responsive to the unique experiences, cultures, strengths, and needs of runaway and homeless youth.

This interactive virtual training will explore the integration of sex and labor trafficking prevention strategies grounded in public health, trauma-informed, and positive youth development (PYD) principles. This session will also highlight the root causes and social conditions related to RHY and human trafficking. Participants will have an opportunity to share their perspectives, ideas, and experiences.

Objectives:

  • Learn about the principles of prevention and the different levels of human trafficking (HT) prevention focusing on runaway youth and young people experiencing homelessness and housing instability.
  • Identify opportunities to integrate HT prevention into an array of youth homelessness programs.
  • Utilize existing program framework to support HT prevention efforts at the individual and community level.

Presenters:

  • Dr. Laura Murphy, Professor, Sheffield Hallam University, Helena Kennedy Centre for International Justice
  • Ana Cody, Human Trafficking Advisor, Family and Youth Services Bureau
